The ribbon should be at least as wide as the label plus backer - the ribbon acts as a barrier between the printhead and label material (as well as printing the image) and therefore ensuring that your ribbon is the correct size for your labels will reducing printhead wear. The type of ribbon you select is importance and should match the label you use.
